Don’t Let Flea Beetles Take Your Canola Down

3 min read

You’re not on your own when these pests hit #

If your seed treatment isn’t holding up in the face of flea beetle feeding pressure, you’ve got a variety of management options depending on which seed treatments you chose. If you’re seeing 25% damage or more on your seedling canola, you could qualify for a manufacturer rebate on the insecticide you use to address the issue.

Your BrettYoung Regional Account Manager is also here for you through this process. They know the options that come with your seed, so give them a call if you aren’t sure what might be available to you. It’s also good to note that some flea beetle damage is to be expected, as the beetles need to feed and ingest the insecticide before it can control them – so don’t run to the sprayer without scouting and evaluating the damage first.

If you are going out to check on your fields, here are a few things to keep in mind with flea beetles:

  • Early season you’ll find them near the edges of the field, but they’ll move inward as time goes on, so check the whole field. The best practice is to use a “W” scouting pattern.
  • While 50% damage is the economic threshold for spraying, 25% is the action threshold. From that point, by the time you can get into your field to spray, you may be at the 50% damage mark.
  • Windy conditions may drive flea beetles to feed on the stems – this can cause more damage in a shorter period of time than leaf feeding.
  • Scout your fields often to watch for changing levels of feeding activity.

Always consult your retailer or crop advisor for best practices on spray timing and necessity. Other resources, like the Canola Council, have great information about assessing flea beetle damage and understanding their feeding patterns.
