BrettYoung partners with multiple suppliers to bring you options on canola seed treatments that you can choose from for your farm.
Most often, seed treatments adequately control the insect pests they’re labeled for, but when pest numbers are high or conditions are right, they may not.
If you find yourself needing to overspray a foliar insecticide this spring to control labeled pests, your BrettYoung canola may qualify for the Syngenta® Canola Seedcare Performance Package or the Bayer BUTEO® start Assurance Program.
If flea beetle feeding is causing 25% defoliation or higher or more than 4 cutworms per square meter are present in your seedling canola, you likely qualify for a rebate on Matador® 120EC or Decis® insecticide.

Evaluating Your Fields for Insect Damage
When out evaluating your fields for insect damage, here are a few things to keep in mind.
- Expect some feeding: Flea beetles and cutworms must feed on the plant before being controlled.
- Scout field edges and interiors: Flea beetles start near field edges but move inwards; use a “W” scouting pattern.
- Know action thresholds: Spray flea beetles at 25% leaf area defoliation; damage can quickly rise to 50%, which is the economic threshold.
- Watch for stem feeding: Wind may drive flea beetles to feed on stems, causing more rapid damage than leaf feeding.
- Monitor for cutworms: Spray when more than 4 cutworms per square meter are present or at 25 to 30% stand reduction; spot spraying is recommended.
- Scout frequently: Monitor fields often for changing feeding activity.
Always consult your retailer or crop advisor for best practices on spray timing and necessity.
Other resources, like the Canola Council, have further information about assessing flea beetle and cutworm damage and understanding their feeding patterns.

FAQ
What are the main insect pests that threaten canola crops?
Flea beetles and cutworms are two common insect pests that can harm canola, especially during the crop establishment phase.
When should a grower consider using a foliar insecticide overspray?
A foliar insecticide overspray should be considered if flea beetle feeding causes 25% defoliation or more or if there are more than 4 cutworms per square meter present in seedling canola.
What seed treatment options does BrettYoung offer for canola growers?
BrettYoung partners with multiple suppliers to provide canola seed treatment options for flea beetles and cutworms, including treatments like Helix Vibrance, Fortenza Advanced and BUTEO start.
How should fields be scouted for flea beetle and cutworm damage?
Fields should be inspected thoroughly using a W scouting pattern. Early in the season, flea beetles are found near field edges and move inwards over time. It is important to scout often and check for feeding activity and plant stand reduction.
What are the action thresholds for spraying flea beetles and cutworms?
For flea beetles, the action threshold is at 25% leaf area defoliation. For cutworms, treatment is recommended when populations exceed 4 per square meter or when there is 25 to 30% stand reduction.
How does a grower make a control claim under BrettYoung seed programs?
If thresholds are met and BrettYoung canola was treated with specific products, growers should call Syngenta or Bayer at the provided phone numbers depending on the seed treatment they used.
