BY 7204LL a front-runner for second year in a row

1 min read

After its second season in the fields, trial results are rolling in for BY 7204LL.

Packed with high yield potential and equipped with Pod DefendR® shatter resistance, DefendR-rated next-generation clubroot resistance, and DefendR-rated blackleg resistance, BY 7204LL is proving to be a reliable contender.

BrettYoung Comparison Trials #

The BrettYoung Comparison Trial (BCTs) program is designed to collect field-scale data on commercially available hybrids and on an industry check hybrid, while assessing the new up-and-comers within the BrettYoung portfolio. BY 7204LL made its debut in the 2023 BCT program at 15 locations, coming out as a frontrunner. Our continued trialing efforts help to collect data on hybrid-specific management practices as we learn more about how our products handle varying weather and climatic conditions from the different growing regions across Western Canada.

This year’s BCTs looked at more canola hybrids with the LibertyLink® herbicide trait system to complement BY 7204LL. To date, nearly 30 BCT sites have been harvested, with quality data finalized from 24 of those locations.

“We had the opportunity to place BY 7204LL against the industry-leading hybrid in our BCTs to collect regional field scale data and assess it under much different growing conditions this season,” said Justine Cornelsen, Agronomic & Regulatory Services Manager for BrettYoung.

So far, BY 7204LL has ended up just ahead of trial means at 101% and at 96% of the industry-leading LibertyLink hybrid. Growers have commented widely on the product’s standability after watching it this growing season, noting how well it stood even through the long, drawn-out harvest.

“This was a challenging fall that really tested the durability of the Pod DefendR trait in BY 7204LL,” said Cornelsen. “But it stood to the test.”

DL Seeds Max Plots #

BrettYoung also has a set of larger block trials in partnership with our main canola genetics supplier, DL Seeds. Each season, the Max Plot locations compare BrettYoung’s commercial products to industry checks and new candidate hybrids for the TruFlex™ and LibertyLink herbicide systems. This year, we received data from 15 Max Plot sites across the Prairies.

“These trials are a great opportunity to see what DL Seeds has to offer, but they’re also a chance to see what BrettYoung has in the TruFlex and LibertyLink systems all at one location,” said Cornelsen.

Within the Max Plot trials, BY 7204LL came in third out of 16 entries, trailing two new experimental canola hybrids. It was 106% of trial mean and 105% of the industry-leading check hybrid. In 2023, BY 7204LL was the top performing hybrid from the 10 Max Plot locations.
