An Overview of This Year’s Soybean BCTs

2 min read

It’s a big year for BrettYoung soybeans. Not only are we trialing the products you know and trust, but we’re also trialing three new soybean varieties which are included in the Manitoba and Saskatchewan provincial soybean trials.

BCTs #

BrettYoung Comparison Trials (BCTs) were first established years ago as a way for Regional Account Managers (RAMs) and growers to assess new and existing varieties against each other while assessing performance against industry checks. Trial locations are all across Western Canada, giving us a well-rounded view of how each variety does in the many conditions of the region.

“As our soybean portfolio has grown, we’ve felt the need to conduct soybean BCTs to give our RAMs and growers experience with new products,” said Justine Cornelsen, Agronomic & Regulatory Services Manager for BrettYoung. “Comparing new varieties to our older, strong ones like Sunna R2X helps to show the increase in genetic potential coming to market.”

This year, four soybean BCTs have been set up to assess three new varieties against BY Rundle XT, BY Rainier XT, Sunna R2X, and an industry check variety.

Similar in design to our canola BCTs, each soybean BCT location consists of varieties that make sense based on their maturity. Each BCT is replicated to help capture the variation in field trials, giving us a more equal product comparison. The second replications are randomized to allow us to compare different products side by side and to take a better assessment of maturity and agronomic characteristics.

We utilize all data collected from BCTs to help us make informed decisions in the fall of how to position each variety.

“The trials provide us not only with the opportunity to check out new varieties for our portfolio but also with the chance to generate more data with recently launched varieties like BY Rainier XT,” said Cornelsen.

Regional Trials #

BrettYoung submits soybean entries to the Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers and the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers regional variety trial programs. These programs provide different trialing locations and help us compare our varieties to a larger number of competitor varieties.

“The provincial trials offer us a more in-depth look at variety performance across all soybean growing regions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan,” said Cornelsen. “The trial coordinators take additional ratings like maturity and IDC scores outside of just yield to help supplement our data for variety positioning.”

New Varieties #

This season, we’ve added three soybean varieties to our portfolio — BY Robson XT, BY Hector XT, and BY Deno XT.

“It’s exciting to be committed to serving our farming community with a growing soybean portfolio,” said Vikas Chand, Soybean, Corn, & Biologicals Product Manager for BrettYoung. “These new varieties have great yield potential and are suited to the growing conditions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.”

BY Robson XT is a great mid- to late season Roundup Ready® XTend variety with a rating of 00.6 RM or 2450 CHU. BY Robson XT is a compact plant with excellent standability and big yields. This variety is an especially great fit in the Red River Valley.

BY Hector XT is a new Roundup Ready XTend variety with excellent defense characteristics and strong yield potential. It features good iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) tolerance and very good phytophthora root rot (PRR) resistance. BY Hector XT is an early maturing variety with a rating of 00.1 RM or 2300 CHU.

BY Deno XT has an outstanding combination of disease resistance and yield. It offers growers an excellent defensive package with very good PRR, white mould, and IDC resistance. BY Deno XT is a Roundup Ready XTend variety, meaning it and the previous two varieties have a top-of-the-line herbicide system to control those tough to manage broadleaf weeds. It’s a medium height variety with a maturity rating of 00.3 RM or 2375 CHU.

All three new soybean varieties will be available for the 2024 growing season. To get a first look at them now, contact your local BrettYoung Regional Account Manager (RAM) to check out a BCT location nearest to you.

BrettYoung also has corn and canola BCTs. To find up-to-date information on how they’re doing, go to brettyoung.ca/product-performance.
