2025 BrettYoung TruFlex® Hybrids

BrettYoung continues to provide a diverse portfolio of hybrids within the TruFlex® herbicide tolerant canola market. With one new launch in the system this year and a total of five TruFlex products in the offering, there’s a hybrid suited for every grower.

Pod DefendR® vs. Non-Pod DefendR Hybrids

One way to categorize the TruFlex hybrids is by the presence of BrettYoung’s pod shatter tolerance trait, Pod DefendR®. Three products carry Pod DefendR-rated shatter tolerance: BY 6219TF, BY 6217TF, and BY 6211TF.

Two hybrids — BY 6214TF and BY 6216TF — do not contain a pod shatter reduction trait. For best results with these hybrids, it is recommended to swath them.

Benefits of Pod DefendR

Pod DefendR was introduced a few years ago and has since proven to be a game changer for BrettYoung canola growers. With a Pod DefendR-rated hybrid, growers can benefit from the flexibility of delayed swathing and straight cutting systems with reduced concern about pod shatter losses.

Pod DefendR Rating Scale

Products with the Pod DefendR designation must score a minimum of 7 on the Canola Council of Canada’s pod shatter rating scale. This scale rates canola hybrids from 1–9, with one indicating poor shatter tolerance and nine indicating excellent tolerance.

Pod DefendR Hybrids

  • BY 6219TF standout traits: Mid-maturing hybrid with clubroot and blackleg protection; rated 7.1 for pod shatter tolerance.
  • BY 6217TF disease resistance: Features Clubroot, Blackleg and Pod DefendR with an 8.0 shatter tolerance rating and taller, vigorous growth.
  • BY 6211TF straight-cut friendly: Early–mid maturity; go-to for non-clubroot zones, first Pod DefendR hybrid, rated 7.2, with Blackleg DefendR®.

“Once you capture all the seed, you won’t be disappointed with the yield results,” said Justine Cornelsen, BrettYoung’s Agronomic and Regulatory Manager.

Best Suited to Swathing

  • BY 6216TF zone flexibility: Fits mid and long-season regions, standability, next-gen clubroot and major blackleg resistance, excellent in Alberta’s clubroot zones.
  • BY 6214TF early maturing: Earliest in the TruFlex lineup, no pod shatter trait but can be delayed swathed, with double-layer Blackleg and Clubroot defense.

In Western Canada, clubroot hot zone or not, straight cutting or swathing, BrettYoung has your needs covered with a TruFlex tolerant hybrid.
