BrettYoung continues to provide a diverse portfolio of hybrids when it comes to the TruFlex™ herbicide tolerant canola market. With one new launch in the system this year and a total of five TruFlex products in our offering, there’s sure to be something for every grower.
One way to divide up the group of hybrids is based on the presence of our pod-shatter tolerance trait, Pod DefendR®. BrettYoung currently has three products with Pod DefendR-rated shatter tolerance — BY 6219TF, BY 6217TF, and BY 6211TF. Both BY 6214TF and BY 6216TF do not contain a pod shatter reduction trait, and for best results with these hybrids, it’s recommended to swath them.
Pod DefendR was introduced a few years ago and has since proven to be a game-changer for BrettYoung canola growers. With a Pod DefendR-rated hybrid, you can enjoy the flexibility of delayed swathing and straight cutting systems with less worry about pod shatter losses.
Products with the Pod DefendR designation must score a minimum of 7.0 on the Canola Council of Canada’s pod shatter rating scale. This scale rates canola hybrids from one to nine, with one being poor tolerance and nine being excellent.
Pod DefendR Hybrids
BY 6219TF is a mid-maturing hybrid option for growers looking for a full clubroot and blackleg disease package and the option to straight cut. With a rating of 7.1 on the pod shatter rating scale, you can be confident in BY 6219TF’s shatter tolerance.
BY 6217TF also comes with all the DefendR traits – Clubroot DefendR, Blackleg DefendR, and Pod DefendR – giving you a doubled layered disease defense and an 8.0 on the pod shatter tolerance rating scale. BY 6217TF is a taller, vigorous plant that becomes easier to manage during harvest with a desiccant and some adjustments to your combine settings.
“Once you capture all the seed, you won’t be disappointed with the yield results,” said Justine Cornelsen, BrettYoung’s Agronomic and Regulatory Manager.
BY 6211TF has been a go-to early-mid maturing product for growers outside of clubroot zones. It was BrettYoung’s premier hybrid with Pod DefendR, scoring a rating of 7.2. It continues to be an easy straight-cut hybrid with a strong Blackleg DefendR package.
Best Suited to Swathing
BY 6216TF is suitable for mid and long-season zones and has a very good standability. BY 6216TF is in its own league with next-generation clubroot protection and RLM7 major blackleg gene protection. This hybrid is suitable for all canola growing areas in Western Canada, particularly in the intensive clubroot zone of Alberta.
BY 6214TF is the earliest maturing hybrid within our TruFlex portfolio. It may not have our pod shatter trait but it can be delayed swathed. It also delivers double-layered DefendR-rated Blackleg and Clubroot disease protection.
In Western Canada, clubroot hot zone or not, straight cutting or swathing, BrettYoung has your needs covered with a TruFlex tolerant hybrid. Reach out to your BrettYoung Regional Account Manager (RAM) for more information.
