2025 BrettYoung Comparison Trial Summary

Another year of BrettYoung Comparison Trials (BCTs) has come and gone, which means it’s time to dig into the data.

BCTs were first established as a way for Regional Account Managers (RAMs) and growers to assess BrettYoung hybrids, new and existing, against each other while assessing performance against industry checks. With trial locations across Western Canada, these field-scale trials show us how BrettYoung canola hybrids perform in every environment.

Trial Review

This year, BCTs were set up to assess LibertyLink® canola, TruFlex® canola, soybeans, and silage corn, with each assessing experimental products. Results from 52 BCTs have been received.

  • 37 LibertyLink BCTs
  • 9 TruFlex BCTs
  • 3 soybean BCTs
  • 3 silage corn BCTs

Justine Cornelsen, Agronomic & Regulatory Services Manager for BrettYoung, said this was the largest BCT trialing network we’ve had thus far, with the exploration focused on new LibertyLink hybrids.

BCTs have previously been of the same hybrid layout but due to differences in maturity, this year’s trials were set up with hybrids appropriate for the growing zone. There’s also a mix of swathed and straight cut trials, with the decision on best harvest method being left to the grower.

Hybrids from BrettYoung can also be found in retailer and grower side x side trials, USA state university hybrid evaluations, and MAX Plots.

The Results

Outlined below are preliminary trial results from data received prior to Oct. 24, 2025. The number of BCT locations each hybrid was entered in was based on seed availability, maturity, and harvest type. Hybrids with different maturities did find themselves side by side in the occasional trial, forming wide yield data ranges.

FAQ

What crops were included in the 2025 BrettYoung Comparison Trials?

The 2025 BCTs included LibertyLink canola, TruFlex canola, soybeans and silage corn.

How many BCTs were conducted for each crop type?

There were 37 LibertyLink BCTs, 9 TruFlex BCTs, 3 soybean BCTs and 3 silage corn BCTs.

What was the main focus of this year’s BCTs?

This year’s exploration focused on new LibertyLink hybrids with trials set up using hybrids appropriate for specific growing zones.

How did the trial design change compared to previous years?

Unlike previous years with the same hybrid layout, this year hybrids were selected based on their appropriateness for the growing zone and both swathed and straight-cut trials were included.

What is notable about the silage corn BCT results?

Complete data and feed quality analysis for the silage corn BCTs will be available in November.

Where else are BrettYoung hybrids evaluated?

BrettYoung hybrids are also found in retailer and grower side-by-side trials, USA state university hybrid evaluations and MAX Plots.

What factors affected the number of locations for each hybrid in the trials?

The number of BCT locations each hybrid participated in depended on seed availability, maturity and harvest type.
