Helix Saltro adding insurance for canola growers

Helix® Saltro® gives you the insurance you need on your canola crop.

BrettYoung hybrid canola comes with Helix Saltro as the base seed treatment. The formulation is one we trust wholly, and you should too.

Helix Saltro has two parts to it. The Helix part of the treatment came first, combining the strengths of three fungicides to give growers broad spectrum early-season defence against diseases — today, it’s made of four different fungicides to protect your canola plants from soil-borne, air-borne, and seed-borne diseases.

Shad Milligan, Syngenta’s Seedcare Technical Lead for Western Canada, said the fungicides work interactively with each other to offer systemic protection. That means as the plant grows, the protection grows with it, blocking the fungus from entering the plant.

“You’re fully protected as a grower,” he said. “It’s all about protecting the genetics so the crop can get the best start possible, and growers can achieve the yields they’re seeking.”

The Saltro part of the seed treatment is a technology that’s exceptionally good at protecting canola from airborne blackleg. Working with the genetics in the canola seed, Helix Saltro ensures the crop is protected from every form of blackleg, even the races that may not be covered by the blackleg resistance genes in the hybrid.

“It’s getting to be more and more important to utilize fungicide and genetics together to protect the genetics,” said Milligan. “In reports across Western Canada, we’re seeing instances of blackleg rise but still with low severity. What that means is that you’re seeing some of these races slipping past the genetics and causing some damage, but it’s not yet at that tipping point. Saltro is that additional component that allows the grower to be protected from any form of blackleg. It’s like your insurance — and then some.”

A systemic active ingredient in Helix Saltro allows the fungicide to move within the plant, protecting it at the most critical stage for a blackleg infection to cause yield loss. Helix Saltro stops the pathogen from entering and spreading to the plant stem, giving your crop the head start it needs.

BrettYoung also offers Fortenza® Advanced as an add-on seed treatment option. Fortenza Advanced gives growers protection from flea beetle and cutworm damage, which Milligan said is just as crucial as disease protection.
